SPELLING TEST: The spelling words for this week are: she, good, they, what, this, you, down, up, are, here.
Please look over the practice test your child is bringing home on Monday. It is important for each student to learn the high frequency words we learn each week. It is important to your child’s reading success. Learning to read is a lot of work. If children have to sound out every word, it becomes so laborious and slow that children might want to give up, or if not, they will have a difficult time comprehending what they are reading. Many words that are used frequently are non decodable (impossible to sound out), so they must be learned by sight. Learning high frequency words by sight, helps children build confidence and fluency in their reading, and thus reading becomes easier and makes more sense.

GRADUATION: I can’t believe we have one more month left in Kindergarten! In preparation for our graduation, our room mom, Missy, is planning a brunch reception immediately after the ceremony. We need some donations to pay for the students’ graduation caps, decorations and food. If anyone has volunteer hours they would like to complete, $10 equals 1 hour of service. If you are interested in helping, please put the money in an envelope and send in your child’s folder. I’ll make sure to get it to Missy. The students are slowing starting to practice for the graduation. It will be on Tuesday, June 19 in O’Ryan Hall.

PROGRESS REPORTS: Progress reports were not sent to Kindergarten students. Please remember that I am available mornings and after school to meet if you’d like.

Safeguard the Children: This week all the classes will be teaching the Safeguard the Children lesson. Protecting God’s Children, Touching Safety Program for Children™, is a school-based curriculum. The job of ensuring children’s safety is a challenging undertaking. The prevention of child sexual abuse requires more than adult awareness, education, and training about the nature and scope of the problem. We must also give our children the tools they need to overcome the advances of someone who intends to do them harm. The Touching Safety program guide (Teaching Touching Safety Guide) is a tool designed to assist parents and teachers in this important task. The Touching Safety program is a vehicle through which parents, teachers, catechists, and youth ministers (educators) give children and young people the tools they need to protect themselves from those who might harm them. Permission slips to OPT out of the lesson were sent home. If you choose to have your child opt out, a copy of the lesson will be sent home to be taught at home.

WEDNESDAY: We will have mass aat 10:15am.  Girls must wear their jumpers.

THURSDAY:
Field Trip to Natural History Museum – We will be taking a field trip to the Natural History Museum on Thursday, April 26 with grades 1 and 2. We will be leaving school (on a school bus) at 8:30am. Once we get to the museum, the students have an hour to explore. We will then meet at the Dino Hall at 10:30am (for 30 minutes). http://www.nhm.org/site/explore-exhibits/permanent-exhibits/dinosaur-hall.  We will then have lunch from 11 – 11:45am. At 12:00pm we will go the Dinosaur Encounters,
a performing arts-based interpretive program that lets visitors get up close and personal with a realistic, life-sized juvenile T. rex. http://www.nhm.org/site/explore-exhibits/permanent-exhibits/dinosaurs/dinosaur-encounters. After the Encounters, we will head back to school.
