Apples: Sunday was the birthday of Johnny Appleseed. Apples will be a theme in our lessons this week. On Wednesday, we will be having a small apple party! Please send an item containing apples with your child (apple juice, apple chips, apple pie, etc.) We are going to have a small apple party and try different apple food at the end of the day. Since there are 23 students in the class, each student bringing just a few items containing apples should be enough for the entire class. We will not need 23 of each item. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask me.

Field Trip: Kindergarten will be going on a field trip to the Long Beach Aquarium on Wednesday, October 7th with grades 1 and 2. The permission slips were sent home on Friday and will be due this week. Parents are encouraged to attend and chaperone the students. Please let our room mom, Robyn Medina, or myself know if you can attend.

Family Fun Night: The 8th grade class will be hosting a Family Fun Night Tuesday (9/29) at California Pizza Kitchen on Charleville and Beverly. A flyer was sent home last week. For all purchases made at CPK, a portion of the bill will be donated to the 8th class for their musical. Please be sure to present the flyer. Additional flyers can be picked up in the office.

Reading Calendar

Please turn in the September reading calendar on Wednesday. I will be sending home the October reading calendar on Wednesday.

Friday: There will no spirit dress on Friday. The students will wear their uniforms on Friday. There will also be NO ice cream on Friday.

Book Orders: The Scholastic book orders for October are due on Friday.

Language Survey: A language survey was sent home on Friday. Please fill this out and return to school as soon as possible.

ITBS Testing: This week, grades 1-8 will be taking the ITBS tests. Kindergarten will not be taking the test.

School Picnic: The annual family picnic will be this Sunday, October 4th. It will be at Cheviot Hills Park-Rancho Park from 1-5pm following the 12 noon mass at Good Shepherd Church. This is a pot-luck picnic. The Kindergarten families are responsible for bringing the appetizers. I hope to see everyone there!

Volunteer Opportunities: There are many opportunities for parents to fulfill their volunteer hours. Parents are encouraged to help with yard duty at lunch time from 11:45-12:35. Parents can also do things at home such as assemble books, cut, or create crafts. Parents can also buy game, puzzles, books or anything else for the classroom for volunteer hours ($10=1 hour). I will prepare a wish list of suggestions to purchase for the classroom.

MATH: Review or complete the math sheet your child is bringing home daily.

PHONICS: Complete the handwriting worksheets.

The “Tt” minibook will be due Wednesday.

Complete the Aa” minibook by Monday.

Follow these instruction:

Title Page– Write your name, color lower-, and uppercase letter.

Page 2– Look at the different fonts the letter is written.

Page 3– Cut out lower-and uppercase letters from magazines and make a collage.

Page 4– First trace the letters with your finger (follow the arrows as indicated on the additional sheet about handwriting sent home today). Then try your

best to trace and write with a pencil. Parents, this does not need to be perfect, don’t erase! Your child will have many opportunities to develop his/her

handwriting throughout this school year.

Pages 5-7– Look at the picture, say the word and listen to the beginning sound. Draw more pictures beginning with the letter, if you wish.

Page 8– Write words that begin with the letter sound. You can use the words in the book.

Bring: Bring items that begin with letters “Tt” on Monday and Tuesday.

Bring items that begin with letter “Aa” (short A sound) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

READING: Don’t forget to mark the Reading Calendar. Please read with your child for 10 minutes or let your child read to you. The September reading calendar will be due on Wednesday.
